You are invited to come knitting
‘knit the walls’ is an ongoing project and open to anyone of any age and any background. You are invited to come knitting, to chat and meet and consider the day-to-day histories stitched into the walls and buildings which surround us.
can we make connections with folk around us and of the past through our actions now, today?
‘knit the walls’ offers a space to talk and wonder – can we make connections with folk around us and of the past through our actions now, today? As we knit this soft, warm, protective, decorative version of southampton’s old town walls, it grows ever larger, holding in its stitches the stories of its makers. We want to invite you to stitch yourself into this record and join this community as we reconnect and rejoin in 2021.
We can supply you with materials (knitting needles and wool) by post, as long as we have your details by 1 week before a session. You can request these when you register you place. If you are a knitter with your own stash, then dive into whatever you have, and knit a stone in any way you choose.

About the artists:
A gentle revolutionary, working with death, knitting and kinship between human and non-human-animals, artist sarah filmer mines the lived experience of a feminist woman and her veterinary experience, often engaging people through co-production. A collaborator and interventionist, sarah uses art to reimagine public space, with guerilla installations peppering her daily spaces; riverside geese (2015) fly in the trees of her local park and knit the walls (2016) uses knitting as a common thread for weaving personal stories into a city-wide participatory initiative.
Yasmin is a photographer artist working with conceptual photography, moving image and research areas of identity, culture and social change both in the West and the Middle East. Within the act of photographing Yasmin uses play and performance within the photo to convey the concept behind the work. Yasmin is also a knitting goddess, who can be found free knitting out in the New Forest.
Follow the work of sarah and Yasmin as we update you with blogs and diary entries coming soon!
