Southampton Hidden Histories Trail
Join us for this free course to learn, research and share the Black history of Southampton.
The course will be led by historian Dr Cheryl Butler, whose recent research into early Black History has revealed many untold stories of Southampton’s diverse communities.
Having acknowledged an interest and need for the spotlight to be shone onto these lesser known stories, we want to support the study and sharing of Black history to better understand the diverse heritage of our city.
This course is free and delivered online in weekly sessions, aimed to inform and inspire. This course will equip you with the skills you need to be a part of the ongoing research into Black history, adding to our collective knowledge of Southampton’s diverse people in history spanning over 400 years.
At the end of the course you will have the option of becoming an accredited White Badge tour guide, fully trained and equipped to deliver a walking tour of Southampton’s Black History. This will be the first walking tour of its kind in the area and we hope to be able to deliver the tours directly to the public from November 2021.
All training and examination costs will be covered by God’s House Tower, with the aim of empowering new voices from diverse communities to share Southampton’s fascinating hidden histories.
Part 1: Learning
Sessions will take place weekly on Zoom from 7pm – 9pm from Tuesday 9th March – Tuesday 20th April.
Part 2: Sharing
This second part of the project will focus on devising, practising and delivering guided walks and will be delivered between May and October. Evening sessions will take place on Tuesdays, and practical sessions will take place at weekends, with the first walks being made available to the public in November 2021.
