SUMMARY:the last knit the walls
LOCATION:
DESCRIPTION:You\'re invited to join the knit the walls gang one final time for an afternoon of knitting and nattering at the last ever community knitting workshop. As host and project founder sarah filmer prepares for the finale exhibition of this long-term community project, this is your chance to join the group at the final workshop and knit your own contributions which will feature in our upcoming installation at God\'s House Tower this winter. Together, the group will collaborate to create a collection of knitted sculptures and objects. Drawing on Virginia Woolf’s ‘A Room of One’s Own’ and Charlotte Perkins Gliman’s ‘The Yellow Wallpaper\', the knitted works will manifest the domestic and the everyday to transform the exhibition space into an immersive knitted room. All knitting materials are provided and the session is open to all abilities, from absolute beginners to experienced knitters. Why not come along and find out more about ‘knit the walls’ and it\'s ongoing legacy in Southampton. knit the walls will take place on Sunday 9th October from 12pm - 4pm in the cafe extension area. The workshop is free to attend with no booking required and drop-ins welcome. About the project the medieval walls of southampton’s old town hold a study of time. each stone reflects the history of southampton, each chip, erosion and mark holds a section of our continuous narrative. ‘knit the walls’ emerged from these musings and we invite you to join us, to muse, to discuss what these stones could have witnessed. creating connections with women of the past, through actions now. together we talk, wonder, and knit, and by implication, write the forgotten women of herstory back into the ancient stones. let\'s get together and be a part of the ever growing warm, protective, functional and decorative record of knitters today. the countless knitted stones holding, in their stitches, the time and relations of their makers, as the old walls hold energies and records of the city’s past. this is a space to come and play, knit, to be creative or just to chat, laugh and be surrounded by community.
