Join us in celebrating the environment at Gods House Tower, where our brand-new Eco Market is set to make its debut in June, as part of our ‘Art for Climate Action’ season.

Our Eco Market promises to be our biggest market yet, featuring some of the most talented and creative ecological makers and artists from the region. You’ll be able to browse a wide range of eco-friendly gifts for your loved ones, as well as local sustainable produce. And if you’re in the mood to treat yourself, we have something special for you too. From jewellery to prints, ceramics, and homewares, the Eco Market is the perfect place to do some guilt-free shopping that makes a difference.

You can also check out the GHT Cafe & Bar which offers a delectable array of food and drink options. Our menu boasts a diverse selection of indulgent bakes, vegan favourites, and refreshing beverages. We are proud to feature Southampton’s very own Hoxton Bakehouse, renowned for their exceptional culinary creations. So come and savour the flavours of our carefully curated menu. We can’t wait to see you there!

The current climate emergency is an urgent and critical concern worldwide. As a cultural organisation, it is our responsibility at ‘a space’ arts to reduce and mitigate our own environmental impact as well as raising awareness and instigating climate action through our programme. This year, we’ve committed to creating a new climate action plan for the organisation, alongside launching the Art for Climate Action programme.

The Eco Market will take place from the 17th – 18th June 2023.

Saturday 17th June 10am – 5pm, Sunday 18th June 10am – 4pm

Entry to the market is free.

Transition Southampton: Imagine Southampton Film Screenings
Friday 17th June – Sunday 19th June

Imagine Southampton in 2030 and that it has become the city you would like it to be, where all you have dreamed of has happened. What does the city and its people look like? How do you feel? What are you doing? What is your life like?

These may sound like indulgent questions in these current times but the we have found that for communities to create the future they want, it helps to imagine it, describe it, discuss it, create stories, and reflect…Transition Southampton have been asking the Southampton community these questions since 2016 and they have been amazed, enthused and inspired by new ideas, activities, events and campaigns that have happened as a consequence of asking. Inspired by Rob Hopkins, one of the Transition movement founders, we’re exhibiting a series of short films that document these conversations in the Barker Mill Project Space at God’s House Tower.

Art for Life: Extinction Rebellion Art Group Exhibition
Friday 17th June – Sunday 19th June

Extinction Rebellion (XR) is an international movement that uses non-violent civil disobedience in an attempt to halt mass extinction and minimise the risk of social collapse due to climate change and environmental degradation. XR protests have always been colourful and distinctive, with the well known ‘hourglass’ symbol representing the movement and imagery that often recreates the natural world, depicting plants and animals.

On Saturday 20th May, the XR Art Group hosted a workshop at God’s House Tower and created flags, patches, prints, posters and placards to protest for climate action. A selection of these works will be exhibited for one weekend only in the gallery spaces at GHT during the Eco Art Market.

Water Rising: Extinction Rebellion Red Rebels Performace
Sunday 18th June, 3pm – 4pm

The Red Rebel Brigade first made its appearance at the London 2019 Rebellion, a mass protest and direct action in response to the environmental crisis – and the first time that Extinction Rebellion entered public awareness. Combining public performance, artistic expression and visual protest, figures draped in red with white faces form a slow-moving, living tableau that’s intended to act as a warning and to prick our collective consciousness about the harm we are doing to ourselves and the planet. Moving on from the first iteration of the Red Rebel Brigade as imagined by Bristolian artist Doug Francisco, the concept has grown into a worldwide symbol adopted by local activist groups.

To close the Art for Climate Action: Eco Art Market weekend, Red Rebels from Southampton invite you to join us for an elegiac performance that will interact with the ancient walls of the tower, which could be lost to us in coming years due to sea level rises. Come together to mourn, to rage and to gather resolve to change the predicted course of the future.
