Join Our Introduction to plaiting – Beginners Course!

Ready to learn the art of plaiting? This in-person course is perfect for beginners looking to get hands-on experience. It’s amazingly calming and you’ll have fun too.

We’ll talk a little about the history of Straw Plaiting for the making of hats, you’ll be able to look at examples of work, books and artwork from the crafts hay-day (accidental pun there.)

You’ll be guided step-by-step through the basics:

  • Intro to 3 ended plait starting with paper and moving on to straw
  • try your hand at a 5 ended plait
  • You’ll be supporting a Critically Endangered Heritage Craft!

Come along, meet fellow craft lovers, and start your plaiting journey with us!

P.S This is a workshop in progress (a workshop for a workshop, so to speak). You will be assisting me with feedback and making sure I create the perfect workshop to take around the UK. This is why the price is just £7, which helps to cover my costs for materials.

Access and Quiet Spaces

Access to the cafe extension is step free Lower Canal Walk and there is a ramp available should you need it to access the cafe, toilets and rest of the building. The courtyard also has step free access from the corner of Lower Canal Walk and Town Quay road.

GHT is a 25-minute walk from Southampton Central Train station and is on a number of local bus routes. Our closest car parks are Gloucester Square and Mayflower park. This part of the city can get very busy with traffic from the cruise ship terminals at this time of year so please do allow for extra time if you’re driving.

For information on parking and travel please visit the Plan your Visit page of our website.

If you’d like to familiarise yourself before your visit you can take a virtual tour of the spaces on our website. You’ll also find a visual story so that you know what to expect and how to identify members of the GHT Team.
